A look behind the scenes at 11 One/Music’s libraries

Mark Hill, born July 27 1967, grew up in a small farming community in the souther most part of Illinois. Raised in a musical family, it was apparent early that he had a gift and quite an ear for music. He began playing piano at the age of 5 picking out melodies of songs he’d heard in church. At age 11 he found the bass quite by chance and knew in short order that bass was his love. The bass quickly became an extension of him. His early days of playing bass consisted of local recordings and traveling regionally in the midwest with his family. In order to make a living, at 22 he switched to top 40 bands in the area all the while knowing that a sessions career in Nashville was truly what he desired. In 1990 he made the 4 hour move to Nashville and quickly made the producers list of up and coming bass players securing many master recordings sessions. In between sessions he toured with artist such as, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Martina McBride, Keith Urban (band leader), Reba McEntire to name a few. 1990-current he has become a first call session musician known for his strong Fender bass tone, working 600+ sessions annually and garnering 8 ACM nominations for bass player of the year, and twice reaching the Music Row All-Stars list. Recording for artists such as The Civil Wars, Kelly Clarkson, Reba McEntire, Brooks & Dunn, The Lone Bellow, Holly Williams, Brett Dennen, Carrie Underwood, Richard Mars, Hank Jr, Toby Keith, Kenny Loggins, Montgomery/Gentry, Eric Church, Luke Bryan, and Charlie Peacock.

Melissa Mattey, a recording, mixing and mastering engineer - producer, songwriter and performing artist, currently based out of Nashville, TN.

Melissa might simply, be best described, as a musical multitool. You could probably find a more poetic way to describe her approach to music. Though categorizing her approach in that manner, would be too flowery a reduction. A reduction that goes against the very ethos that has led to a multifaceted career, spanning genre and modality. An ethos and belief, that the critical detail is where the magic of a production finds purchase.

Melissa’s musical roots trace back to her youth, growing up in Malaysia and Brunei. At a young age she began the study of classical piano and music theory under the “Royal Schools of Music” curriculum. An early introduction that began an educational pursuit of music, which ultimately culminated in attendance at “Berklee College of Music” where Melissa studied recording, production, mixing and music synthesis, obtaining a BA in Music Production and Engineering.

AS AN ENGINEER - Melissa’s work has led to credits on several notable Grammy Award nominated and winning records, including (Faith Hill - “Breathe” - Best Country Album win), (Bruce Springsteen - “The Rising” - Best Rock Album win), (The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir - multiple Best Gospel Album wins), (Cam - “Burning House”), (Van Hunt - “Dust”).

She also has recording and mix credits on award winning and commercially acclaimed film soundtracks and television productions including (“The Great and The Small” - Fahrenheit Films Jury Award: Best American Independent Feature at Sonoma International Film Festival), (“I am Potential” - American Family Studios), (“Something New” - Focus Features - Black Reel Award for Best Original Soundtrack nominee), (“Apple Pie” - Apple iPhone 6 global ad campaign).

AS A PRODUCER/ WRITER/ PERFORMING ARTIST - Melissa has combined the technical knowledge of an engineer, a love of synthesizers and a passion for sonically immersive productions to help carve out a niche in the ever burgeoning Nashville music scene, notably as a member of indie rock outfit Elliot Root and sync-ready electro ambient trio Everyone Moves Away.

As a producer, writer and performer in Elliot Root, Melissa has helped to create a catalog that has amassed over 75 million global streams. She has toured (proudly representing Dave Smith Instruments/ Sequential as a featured artist) with Zac Brown Band, NEEDTOBREATHE, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, X Ambassadors, Good Old War, and played some of the largest music festivals in the world, including Hangout Music Festival, Firefly Music Festival, Forecastle Music Festival, Live On The Green, and more.

As a producer, writer and performer in Everyone Moves Away, Melissa has helped to create a catalog that has seen major sync placement in global ad campaigns for Amazon Music Unlimited, McLaren Automotive, and Canon, as well as various other multi-sync features, including a sizzle reel and production intro piece for the Garth Brooks’ stadium tour.

After more than 20 years working in the music industry, it would be easy to assume a level of complacency but Melissa remains a steadfast fan of music. At heart, a student of the process. A musical multitool, poised and ready to help artists uncover the critical detail and magic in their productions.
